Bullying

Oftentimes, schools and parents attempt to stop bullying by punishing the bullies.  While this is a necessary component of any setting, not enough emphasis is placed on teaching the victims what to do if they are bullied and, better yet, how to stop being targeted in the first place.

There are always going to be bullies out there.  Dr. Greenaway works with children who have been the victim of bullying and teaches them social behaviors that reduce their risk of being bullied.

Much of what is upsetting with verbal bullying isn't just the words the bully is using, but all the thoughts that go on in the victim's mind.  Beliefs such as, "Nobody likes me," "Everyone is siding with the bully," "The bully is making be look ridiculous in front of everyone," etc.

These two components go hand-in-hand, because it is often the belief system of the victims that lead them to act in certain ways that make them more enticing to the bully (e.g., getting upset, crying, shouting, etc.).  Dr. Greenaway not only helps children learn new behaviors but also new ways of viewing the bullying scenarios.
